A Bit of Helpful Information (Type 1 Diabetes)

Hello, hello! If you are new here, I am a Type 1 Diabetic and have been for a little less than 21 years. That being said- the following information are things that have helped ME and or some of my friends. I am not a doctor…just someone who has a little experience. That leads to my second disclaimer- I am not perfect. I still have really bad “diabetic days” and I still have lots of room to improve. So please- always consult your doctor and pay attention to YOUR own needs.

All that blah-blah aside, here is:

A Bit of Helpful Information for Type 1 Diabetes:

  1. Keep a little notebook in your bag. If you are struggling to manage or track your numbers…make it as convenient as possible. Have a little pad of paper, notebook, etc and a pen right beside you medical supplies. Work smarter-not harder.
  2. Cinnamon. Adding cinnamon to your breakfasts or taking a cinnamon capsule in the morning can help you manage your diabetes. Why? “Cinnamon may help lower blood sugar and fight diabetes by imitating the effects of insulin and increasing glucose transport into cells ( 6 ). It can also help lower blood sugar by increasing insulin sensitivity, making insulin more efficient at moving glucose into cells.” -Keith Pearson
  3. Healthy fats and proteins. We live in a carby-carb world and carbs are good! That being said- being sure you get a balance of healthy carbs with an almost equal amount of healthy fats and protein can help control and steady blood sugars. Eat just a piece of toast in the morning? Add an avocado or an egg.
  4. Hydrate. I know…seems like with every health blog…it’s begging you to drink water. But with diabetes- it is so much more important. Your body is already stressed managing with a chronic disease…don’t dehydrate it
  5. Treat yourself. The art of balancing your diabetes is balance itself. You are like any other individual…you shouldn’t over indulge in sweets, you should exercise, you should hydrate…but eat that cupcake (take that insulin, though), have a lazy day…treat yourself. While it is critical that you take care of yourself and a more precise level than those with functioning pancreas’s…you’re still a human that needs a break…and with a never ending disease…you have to find the little breaks or you will burn out.

That is all for this blog! Let me know if YOU have your own advice or questions! Both are very welcome and appreciated. Hope you all have a good day and healthy blood sugars 🙂 .

  1. Great to read about how a long-term diabetic handles the ups and downs of daily life with all the emotions to manage and equipment (needles/meters/alcohol swabs + notebook) to carry around. Thanks for sharing!!
